As a youngster in London, Ontario, Karenann Terrell did many non-traditional things.
“Instead of dressing dolls up, I was more interested in taking them apart and putting them together again,” she confessed.

“I’ve always been interested in machinery. I was the first girl in my high school to take vocational education.”
Terrell hadn’t considered an engineering career until 1981, when an engineering professor from a local university spoke to her vocational education class.
“It was like `The Graduate,’ when the adult tells Dustin Hoffman the future is plastics,” she said.
“The professor told us, `Computers are coming, and we need girls.’ I thought I could do that.”
Terrell was intrigued by the cooperative education program offered at General Motors Institute, the engineering school in Flint, Mich., owned at the time by the giant automaker and which since has changed its name to Kettering University.
