Prominent scientist and Sherman Oaks resident Abolghassem Ghaffari, who helped put men on the moon while working for NASA, died earlier this month at the age of 106.
Ghaffari, originally from Iran, was a colleague of Albert Einstein in the early 1950s at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University under the direction of J.
Robert Oppenheimer, who headed the U.S. atomic bomb program during World War II.
Ghaffari, who died Nov. 5, was honored in October by the Spirit of Iranian Noted Achievers at Harvard University, where he once taught, for his lifetime achievements.
Ghaffari, along with some of his Iranian cohorts such as the late Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi, was one of the “founding fathers” of modern science and engineering in Iran, said USC engineering Professor Najmedin Meshkati, a longtime family friend and also a professional colleague of Ghaffari.
